The THW, founded in 1950, was a direct response to the devastation of WWII and the need for a civilian organization to assist with natural disasters, accidents, and infrastructure restoration, separate from the demilitarized German Army (Bundeswehr).
Responsibilities: Their focus was on humanitarian aid, technical assistance, and emergency support, something that did not exist under the Nazi regime.
Under Allied Supervision: In the early years, they worked under the supervision of the Allies, who divided Germany into four zones, and helped build a functioning society.
